Stay a While

May 9, 2024 by Kelsi

The chimp house can be a bit chaotic in the morning into the early afternoon, but in a good way, of course. The building is humming with energy in preparation of the day, as the humans prepare meals, enrichment, food puzzles, work on laundry, clean the building, and do more laundry. Meanwhile, the chimps are either laughing and playing or displaying and causing a ruckus. Most days are a combination of all these activities. However, by the afternoon, the chimp house seems to be calmer, at least for the humans. After lunch, is often when you will see the chimps in the position I like to call, come over and stay a while. This is when the caregivers can sit and spend some time with their friends. The chimps often sit in a comfortable position and when they see you, they may get up and invite you to groom or sit with them for a while. Sometimes though, as we walk by to grab laundry or clean toys, we just admire how cozy and laid back they look.

Willy B grooming himself, foot up on the mesh to show he is very relaxed:

Obviously, Willy B have to try to look at his teeth through the camera:

Honey B can somehow look relaxed in a nest while simultaneous looking up to no good 🙂

And Rayne, the laid back queen herself:

Bonus photo of Annie! We put out a lunch forage today with some whole oranges and a few whole veggies. Annie went all the way to the top before everyone and scored big time!

Go Annie Banannie, as I call her! I saw a picture of Rebecca at STC earlier today and she looks just like Annie! Is she perhaps, her daughter?

Both Rebecca and Annie were taken from the wild. It’s very unlikely, but it is possible there’s some relation! Apparently Rebecca is also a kale fan!

Go Annie!!!! I love seeing the low-ranking girls score big during forages! Enjoy those oranges, Annie!
Also, Willy B is such a ham. That guy is selfie-obsessed!

Thanks for the info on them, Eli!

Good for dear Annie, two fists full. I don’t know what to make of Honey B, I’m worried about her, she is being too well behaved. She isn’t up to her usual shenanigans. Well, in her own time.

The early Annie-Bird gets the LOOT! I liked that, too!
I mean, who wouldn’t like a little siesta after lunch every day?

Well, Rayne, Honey B & Willy B certainly look very sleepy and relaxed in their nests. (I can feel a snooze coming on just watching them!). Peace and quiet seems to be the norm there. I love my sweet Annie going from strength to strength and enjoying her largesse. There’s something for everybody at your sanctuary whether it’s a chill out or a nap. Magic moments.

Willy B’ might not have a full set of choppers, and the ones that he has might have less-than a snow white hue (I can relate: I, too, have an aversion to dentists and all the pomps and deceits if their dark arts), but, oh, what an irresistible play face!

After a morning of hard work it must feel so good to grab a quiet moment with the chimps. That second photo of Willy B is great. All the photos tell a sweet story but seeing Annie on the structure enjoying her whole orange really brought an ear-to-ear-smile to my face. Another reminder to take the time to savor the little things in life!
