The Greeting Committee

July 28, 2023 by Jenna

At the sanctuary, a way to know spring has officially ended and summer has kicked off is the Greenhouse panels coming down. The Greenhouse panels keep the Greenhouse secure in the winter months from snow and rain. It also maintains temperature quite a bit, which while helpful in the fall/winter, it would be quite brutal if we did not remove them in the summer. Once Washington gets warm enough, which is usually late May or early June, the Greenhouse panels come down and the chimps get to take in the fresh air and breezes, apart from being in their outdoor habitats and chute space. The Greenhouses are a popular hangout spot year-round, but the chimps definitely get excited for the panels coming off. Specifically this year with the panels coming off of Greenhouse 1, there was much excitement because it allowed Jamie’s group to watch Cy’s group more closely on The Bray and in their chute.

One of my personal favorite things about my job is the greeting committee every morning. Is it considered a committee if it is just one person? Either way, one of my most favorite things is driving up the driveway on my way into work and seeing Cy waiting to greet me in the Riverview Greenhouse. Some days, he sits there quietly and stares. Some days, he bipedal swaggers with excitement. I decided to record Cy’s morning greetings randomly so I could make a blog video about it. Apologies in advance for having to listen to my high-pitched, excited voice greeting Cy back!

Oh Jenna, that was so terrific! Your excitement was just as wonderful as Cy and company. To pull into your workplace and see Cy standing there waiting for you is a great incentive to come to work every day. How great do you feel seeing his greetings?! Thanks for making such a big difference in his life (and Lucky’s and Gordo’s and all the chimps). And thanks for taking and compiling all these clips together. I’ve got to go and watch it again!

Jenna, if the Rock Hudson of CSNW puts down his magazines for you, that means you’re something special!
    Thanks for sharing this perspective!

Now I know the true meaning when someone says “I have a job that I love and getting up for work is no problem”. What a fantastic start to the day for you, Jenna, and I loved hearing your voice greeting Cy. One of those moments that you will always remember. Thank you for taking the time to put this lovely video together for us,It sure made me feel I was up there with you. Oh and it was interesting to see the chimp house from that angle.I loved it!

I love hearing you greet them. My dog sits on my lap while i look at the CSNW blog every day…. He recognized the greeting tones and looked at me like … wow mom you’re not the only one who talks like that in the morning. Love it! What a cool perspective of your daily entry as well as the building. Thanks Jenna

Thanks, Jenna, for sharing with us the wonderful way you start your day. Judging from your happy voice and i’m sure a big smile, it is hard to know who is more excited about your arrival -you or Cy.

Delightful video. Was surprized to see how big the building is in that drive-up view. It is much larger than I had envisioned.

What a great way to start your day! I’m just amazed that you can tell who each chimp is from such a distance. I guess when you are used to seeing them everyday, it makes it easier.

    Hey Jenna,
No need to appologize; it is endearing to hear the love in your voice.
Those chimps are lucky to have you looking after them.
    Great blog.

Amazing start to every day! I was an RVT at WWS and every morning, and afternoon, when I was walking the compound giving all the animals their treatments I always looked forward to Cys invitation, by way of a clap, to get my attention to stop my rounds and come over for a visit. I was part time and only there one day per week but I looked forward to it everyday! Thank you for this video! such a nice reminder!

Hi Deanna! I so enjoy hearing your stories about the 9 from your experience and perspective while they lived at WWS. Thank you for sharing your memories. Having handsome Cy clap to get your attention to come and visit must be a thrill. What a gift!!

Thank you, Jenna, for reporting from the Greeting Committee. How fortunate one must be to come to work and be met with Cy, Lucky and a Bronx Cheer from Terry.

Every four years in our two-year-long Presidential campaigns, one always here’s the patronizing message that “Candidate X” is “the sort of guy you could sit down and have a beer with.”

Yes, and as I was saying (before the Combox software so politely cut me off), the presumption behind that canard is that the mass of American voters are that gullible to fall for that line (alas, there is evidence to indicate as much…). For myself, I would be far more content to be able to spend a morning in the Cascades with Cy, offering the latest movie mag for his consumption. I would be curious to know what he makes of Ryan Gosling’s star turn as a Ken doll in the new Barbie propaganda film.

Speaking of which, it comes as a relief to know that Foxie, Neggie, et al at the CSNW have far better taste in doll companionship.

Tobin. I’d love to sit down and have a a cup of coffee with “Candidate” Cy if that day ever comes.
