Wow, thanks JB! I love Dora’s smug chow-expression. And thanks for including the shot of the eagle and the elk herd — I counted at least 8 of them, and I’ve never seen a herd of elk before so this was really special. I wonder if they sneak some of the barn’s hay for themselves. Now about Cy and his reading, I just can’t seem to get over its effects on me (and I don’t want to). He’s so very sincere about it, like Jamie and her books and tools. Just slays me every time!

Great photos J.B. Thank you… such handsome propertymates you have! 🙂
Maureen says
Holy cow! (So to speak) A herd of elk on your lawn! And eagles! And cattle! And *16* chimpanzees! Wow! How very, very, absolutely, cool!
Kathleen says
May primate chow rain from the sky! Yippee!! Perhaps Droa is hording the chow for fear of it running out again. Smart gal.
I would be putty in Gordo’s hands if I were on the receiving end of his side eye expression.
I can hear Willy B crunching that leek in my mind. And Cy fascinates me with his passion of his magazines.
Lastly, seeing the wild herd of elk I couldn’t help thinking about Ellie”Buttons”. I hope she settled into her new captive surroundings finding comfort and companionship in those around her. And I hope her dreams are full of walks around Young’s Hill with the staff at her side, watching the antics of seven amazing chinpanzees who were her adopted family.

I thought of Ellie, too, Kathleen….and JB’s funny story of seeing her face peering in at them through the window..:laughing:

These photographs — and their subjects — from yesterday and today provide a welcome respite to the news of the anthropogenic tragedy transpiring in Ukraine. How fortunate it is that an aerie of bald eagles has taken residence in the treetops on the Sanctuary. Given their near-extinction a half-century ago, I always find it a privilege whenever I see an eagle soaring above the Upper Mississippi Valley or above the north shore of Lake Superior. Perhaps their presence is a portent that the species who forage and walk below them on Young’s Hill can also emerge from their endangerment in their indigenous, Central African, homelands.
Betsy says
Well put, Tobin. I often think the same thing, that if we can save one species we can save them all, given the will.

Gordo and that neat and trim beard….Sir Sean Connery!
Linda C says
That’s a lot of elk, JB! Bust out the extra hay bales!
Go ahead and celebrate, Li’l Dora! That’s a LOT of chow for a tiny woman!
You’re right, no one chomps like Mr RockStar! Are those scabs from playing rough, I hope?
J.B. says
Cy and Willy B had their first scuffle during an intro last week but neither received any serious injuries and they made up pretty quickly.
Linda C says
Good to hear that it ended quickly and without anything serious–it had to happen at some point. At least Mr Handsome’s face is still handsome!
Thanks, JB

Hooray for chow! Dora is making sure she doesn’t run out ever again…I wonder if she has a secret hidey hole for her stash somewhere? Their constantly changing, wonderful expressions fill me with joy every day, and the magnificent eagle and smart elk are an added bonus today. Did you ever get Lucky on the scales? And do you know when Cy developed his interest in reading? I bet he could dish the dirt on many celebrities and give us all nature lessons from National Geographic.
Kim Harris says
JB, thank you for the awesome pics of all the animals who grace us with their presence. The sanctuary couldn’t be in a more beautiful setting. Seeing pics of the eagle and elk reminds me of me of the first times I was fortunate enough to see these magnificent creatures. I good gush on for hours about all of the 16 who give us so much joy, but everyone else has beat me to it!
Nancy Duryea says
Love the picture of the elk herd, it’s interesting to see the various creatures who trespass over the property. Mr Cy Chimpanzee–I never tire of seeing him reading his magazines. ?
