Burrito in a Tub

June 5, 2021 by Diana

The other day I was questioning J.B. as to whether he thought we deserved to have playful Burrito in our lives, and his reply was, “I don’t even think the world deserves Burrito.”

Deserving or not, here he is to spread joy to all of us, doing whatever it is he was doing or trying to do with an empty tub and a big tub full of water.

Speaking of spreading joy, have you registered for The Queen’s Brunch yet?

The virtual event is on June 13th, just eight days away!

I was going to share that there were some Burrito pillow cases available to buy now that had been carefully stashed away from past events, but the two we had were snatched up already!

There are, however, still a few pillow cases featuring Negra, Foxie, and Willy B on the online auction site. You might need to act fast to get one!

I have a little different take on the question — I think we all deserve a Burrito in our lives to remind us of the importance of joy, innocence and play, no matter what else is happening. He’s a testament to overcoming obstacles (even rattlesnake bites!), as are they all. I’m so grateful for all the humans who believe in them and support them in so many ways, and to the chimps for their resilience and fortitude in the face of horrific adversity. Ok, so this may sound a little dramatic but — not sorry! (Like the Reese’s commercials!) Let the playing begin!

Whether or not we deserve him Diana, we’ve got him, and I am so glad we do!
Why, yes, I have indeed registered. I was surprised to see pillows with Burrito and Negra, since they had been sold out before and last year did not show signs of coming back. So last year, I bought myself a Foxie case and a Willie B for my great nephew. Which he just got for his birthday last week…. along with a 98.76% chimp shirt.Had I known Burrito would be available or beautiful Neggie with her sunflower, I might have waited. I suggest, for next year, Jodie with lilacs, and that you make triole the amount available! ;D

Good question Diana! I loved J.B.’s reply “I don’t even think the world deserves Burrito.”

Yup, I’m very grateful Burrito is in my life, even if from afar. He’s a marvel. And I love and adore him.

I’m with J.B. Humans have a world view that other animals do not: selfishness. Not self survival but pure unadulterated self-centeredness. As a species we do not deserve what Nature gives so freely. Not while we continue to destroy it. When people panic over climate change, it’s always about what will happen to humans, to US. I don’t care about that. At all. I want to know that the wildlife we massacre, the plants and trees we flatten, and the water we poison will recover. And I know that if humans were out of the picture and all the cars and factories came to a screeching stop, we would hear Earth take a sudden gasp of air to fill its blackened lungs and it would begin to heal. With us gone it would not be long until all was green and blue again and the chimpanzees, whales, birds, all would be plentiful again.
No. We don’t deserve Burrito. Any of the Burritos, or the Maves or the Negras and sadly, I don’t believe the human species as a whole ever will. The task is to never forget that.

I heartfully and mindfully second your appraisals, Francoise.

Yes, well said Francoise. I agree with you 100%. With one little exception, the Indigenous people of the world may remain. They are deserving. They understand and respect Mother Earth and the natural world. We need to listen to them…..

You are spot on with your reply..I have seen numerous pictures from above and on the earth before the pandemic and during the crisis showing amongst other things how air pollution has dramatically decreased in response to the closure of many polluting businesses.

Very well said, Francoise. We are not deserving of such a precious planet. But I think Burrito is here to show us his wonderful qualities….resilience, strength, friendship, courage and many more. He’s making up for the childhood he lost with all his playing and silliness.

We do not — cannot — deserve a treasure like Burrito. However, we can still cherish him and the other great apes by working to heal and renew this unique planet upon which only someone as endlessly fascinating and endearing can be encountered.

The World may not deserve him, but you folks sure do! You give your lives to making all of theirs happier and healthier and you deserve his sunshine. He is such a happy little guy and he brightens all of our days, and we thank you for sharing them all with us!
My comment on Facebook was Rub a dub dub, one happy chimp in a tub, and he is definitely happy.

Knowing that Burrito was kept in a human home during his toddler years, was leased to an “animal act” for two years and then sent to a laboratory – could some of his behavior today reflect his memories of his time in human culture? Could he retain memories, perhaps incomplete, as are most of our early memories, of activities like baths or dressing up? Did he get affection and approval for human-like behavior? And then later he had the challenge of learning to live in chimpanzee culture. Through all that, he retains a gleeful spirit. We as a species put him through so much; at least we can be inspired by his resilience and perseverance.

Burrito certainly didn’t look happy or healthy when he first arrived at CSNW. The Burrito we see now is the Burrito brought out by you. Yes you definitely deserve Burrito.
