Where the Wild Honey B’s Are

June 15, 2020 by Katelyn

We often jokingly refer to the chimpanzees as Pacific Northwest chimps due to their love of our often quintessential cloudy, on the cool side days. Though such weather is much less common here on the eastern side of Washington state, we relish our stormy springs. Well, most of us. Okay, maybe just me and the chimpanzees. 😉 Having been born and raised in the foggy coastal redwoods, I understand the chimps’ joy completely. And despite the rainy morning, the chimpanzees didn’t hesitate to rush out to Young’s Hill, hair standing on end with excitement, still clutching their breakfast, to head off on a walk or just enjoy their pineapple outdoors:

Burrito:

Missy and Jody conferring about their neighbors:

Missy wasted no time heading off to run around the perimeter in the rain, chow bag in mouth. She kept stopping to see who was joining her and finally took off at full zoom on her own:

Foxie and her apples:

Cuuuute!:

Burrito is not a fan of walking in the grass or walking in the rain. I mean, tall, wet grass?? Ugh. But he braved it all to come along on a walk with Jamie and Missy and I. Why on earth he took the route full of tall, wet grass vs. the cleared path, only he knows. But he’s just the most endearing guy, sneer face and all:

Burrito, Jamie and Missy:

Nutmeg, Betsy, Honey and Meredith chose to take cover under the Ponderosas in the rain and seemed to think the chimps were kooky for being out in it:

Burrito as it began raining in earnest:

Meanwhile, there’s Honey B. As an enrichment item for the big celebration on Saturday for Queen Negra’s birthday and the chimps’ twelve year anniversary in sanctuary, a knit crown was tossed in the mix of party stuff. The Queen didn’t take an interest in it, but who do you think we found sporting it around her neck today?! Of course! Honey B! Creative person that she is. It’s a little hard to make out as she had been ripping and running and zooming, but it really reminds me of the crown Max in “Where the Wild Things Are” wears.

Here she is enjoying a snack while sitting on her new birthday skateboard:

    Hi, Katelyn,
Boy, she’s not letting go of that skateboard, is she!? A well-loved present!
Nice photo of the bleeding hearts at the top. Today, right out of the gym, I drove to see if the nature reserve had opened up, as the Ocean Drive park has (a great sunset after dinnertime Saturday night), and as I went through the dune area of second beach, I noticed that all of the ruga roses are in bloom, all dotted with pink and white.
Well, on a rainy day, if pineapple doesn’t cure your blues, I don’t know what will! Nice pic of a Foxie smile!
    Have a good night, all!

Thanks for the wonderful rundown on the happenings today. What was Burrito thinking as he plodded through the tall wet grass?! That face, yup still adorable even if he is sneering. Nice seeing the beautiful bovines today. Now to Honey B, we need to capitalize on her knack to accessorize. Waistbands, crown cowls, fanny packs, all created under a custom Honey B label, what a great way to raise funds for the sanctuary. lol And she needs her own custom designed board too. Never a dull moment.

I’ve been wondering if Goney B would enjoy a tutu as much as The Boss…

Enjoyed all the photos. The bleeding hearts brought back memories of my grandmother. Lilly of the valley and bleeding hearts were her favorite flowers. You don’t see them around very often now.

I had never seen them til I moved to the East Coast 20 years ago. (My mom wasn’t much on flowets, just lilac, peony, and morning glory bushes, and one yellow evening primrosr that she absolutely coddled).

Oh, the peonies are out up here in Toronto. After poppies my favourite bloom.

Not to anthropomorphize much but that photo of Missy and Jody is exactly as you say: conferring. I can just hear “What’s with the rain?” “Oh, I love it! And this pineapple is just delish!”

I think that if you had been given the opportunity to do personality tests on the California 3 before the decision was made on who to bring, you could not have done better. What a trio they are. Brave Willy B, sweet Mave and life-of-the-party Honey B. Perhaps they are better with just each other where they can shine their own stars with no competition from the 7. They certainly are settling in to their new home. And a lot of it has to do with all of you fabulous carers.

Always so much going on over there at the sanctuary with everyone doing their own thing. Honey B is still celebrating! Thanks for sharing the beautiful pictures.

Honey B is fast taking over my heart. What an outstandingly unique Chimpanzee she is. I love watching her clean, clear the doorways and um, toss stuff out of the chute! ????

Yes that video of Honey clearing up the party room the other day was a beaut. She is so concentrated with the job in hand as if mama just told her clean your room or no going out to play.

Adorable pictures today. I love the freedom the chimps have to be who
they really are. Such amazing creatures. Thank you.

Again more wonderful pictures. Chimps are great but the poor cows sheltering from the rain, so cute
