Noisy Neighbors and Sock Puppets

April 14, 2020 by Chad de Bree

It’s a beautiful day here at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. The sun is out, there is a light breeze, and the chimpanzees are spending their time with each other both inside and outside.

When they were given access to Young’s Hill, Missy raced outside with Annie close on her metaphorical tail.

Jody was actually the first one out on Young’s Hill today, and also the first one back. What she really wanted was to spy on her neighbors. Once she realized her neighbors were not in the Chute at that moment, she headed back inside.

With Missy coming in right behind her.

Burrito, on the other hand, knows that he can just wait by the window for his neighbors to make an appearance without having to go outside to check.

And when their neighbors do make an appearance, be prepared for a lot of hooting and hollering.

Jody and Foxie caught a glimpse of Willy B as he made his way into the Chute and immediately began hooting.

Though Willy B, Mave, and Honey B spent a considerable amount of time in the Chute today, they also spent a lot of time keeping busy indoors, as well.

Mave decided she wanted to make a sock puppet.

She was actually pretty happy and satisfied with her sock puppet.

Willy B spent a lot of time napping and requesting his caregivers to play chase with him. When we wasn’t doing that, he made sure his neighbors knew of his presence by displaying in the Mezzanine.

It usually starts out with him dragging his yellow bucket around to make as much noise as possible as a buildup, before it crescendos into a scream and him boxing himself in the mirror.

When the mirror wasn’t used for Willy B’s shadowing boxing practice, Honey B used it to look at herself and her caregivers through the reflection.

I’m so thankful that I get to read this blog everday while I’m shelteted in place. They always make me smile, and I just love “our” chimps so much.

Jody must be feeling better and back to her old self if she was snooping on her neighbors. And it cracks me up the way Burrito sits at the window waiting to see newbies. I wonder if the California Crew have any idea how popular they are! I must confess, I’d be pretty excited to see Mave and her sock puppet pal as well as Willy B in full display mode.

Do Honey B, Mave and Willie B ever go outside? If not, why….if so….when & how do their neighbors feel about that. Do you’all ever open the Howdy door so they can visit? If not, why…if so, how do they react? Sorry, lots of questions.

So do Willy B and his two ladies ever get to go out into the yard?

I know I’m repeating myself in saying just how much this daily blog with all the marvelous (professional looking) photos & accompanying stories fill me “all the way up” with so much joy that I’m usually (literally) laughing out loud & smacking my knees…I deal with an ongoing (frightening) health situation & the fact many weeks I can go for da-yyys without even having to use my voice…& with the isolation of quarantine, I’m feeling vulnerable…

Then I read about Willy B’s excitable displays & acting out boxing at himself in the mirror, & I fall over with laughter…
Just seeing sweet Burrito sitting at his window with a toy in his mouth while he hopes to eventually spy on the California Gang
tickles the heck out of me…There’s really nothing that any of these ten chimps do that doesn’t fascinate me beyond words…They’re truly one of the highlights of my day-to-day life that I really look forward to, & I thank you all at CSN for for that…Bless you all…Humans, chimps & the sweet looking (gentle) cows for helping me through these tough times always with a smile on my face…

Oh Debi, I’m so sorry you are going through a difficult time, but I’m glad we can be here and bond with each other over these beautiful chimpanzees. They have been through so much and deserve our care. And I hope you are getting through this strange time alright, I don’t have a way to get you my direct contact, but I’m thinking good thoughts about you. Bless.

I love that someone recently called Willy B, Honey B and Mave “The Californians.” Reminds me of the SNL skit, too funny. I do hope that The Californians make their way outdoors soon, that will be a glorious day for everyone. In the mean time, all the chimps seem to be enjoying their indoor time, and we have the caretakers to thank for that. Thanks to all of you!
