Enrichment Puzzle

May 6, 2010 by Jackie

Recently, I saw a video from a study of chimpanzee cognition in which chimps were presented with a peanut inside a clear tube that was mounted to the outside of their enclosure. Within a short amount of time, the chimp began filling the tube with water so that the nut would float to the top. Genius! So, yesterday I decided to see how these guys would handle the problem and zip-tied a couple of nut-filled bottles to the outside of the caging. Clearly, my method of attaching the bottles wasn’t quite as elaborate as the one used in the study, since the chimps could just turn them over, but it did keep them busy and entertained for quite some time!

Pretty amazing. Never get tired of watching them figure things out. Of course I’d get excited just watching them, watching paint dry!!

    Thx Jackie!!

Aha! It looks like they learned from each other! That’s pretty slick. 🙂

Jackie, the video you mentioned, that chimpanzee is in a cage with vertifical bars, not mesh caging. I think the mesh caging was more time consuming, but even with that difference. our chimps still wanted what was inside those bottles. I had to LOL when Jamie was kicking the bottle, upside down, very funny. I was glad to see Mr. B come over to take a peek inside the bottle and when Foxie gave him a kiss and he gave her a hug. I’m proud that Foxie’s persistence paid off and that Jody came over to see what’s going on, great video.
