Negra and friend

July 8, 2015 by Katelyn

Negra spent the day hanging out with a new friend. And if you’ve been following the blog recently, you may be able to guess who that might be. Diana got some great photos of the Queen enjoying a leisurely morning in the greenhouse and it didn’t take long to spot her new companion.

You can just see a tuft of white hair sticking out from under Negra’s hip pocket:

Negra heard the train coming and one of her favorite things to do is watch it go past in the valley below. She also loves to bang on the window at it as it passes by and today she seemed to be telling her little friend all about it.

For reasons unclear to the humans, trolls are the “it” item du jour in the chimp house again. Jody has been wearing a scarf with several trolls tied onto it for two days! She even ran back in before breakfast to retrieve it and put it on during her meal. But no worries about Foxie, she’s been spending her time with Dora today.

Thrilled beyonds words that Negra has a friend in trolls! These photos are so endearing, hairdo’s and all. But the shot of Negra discussing the train passing to her new pal — priceless.

Now let’s see some photos of silly Jody in her designer troll scarf!!

It is amazing that such small dolls can bring the chimps so much pleasure.

What do you think it is with the trolls? Do they see similar features in the dolls? I can see where they would as I always thought a troll doll had a chimp face. But nonetheless trolls where a favorite of mine growing up.

Your guess is as good as ours, Stephanie. Though personally, I have also noticed a similarity between newborn chimpanzees’ faces and features at times. But given how many humans are smitten with troll dolls, I guess it doesn’t surprise me that the chimps have fallen for their charms as well. 🙂

The troll dolls’ facial features actually mimick the young chimpanzee facial features quite well especially the relative sizes and positions of eyes and ears.

A real observation could be made if two troll dolls were offered, one modified to look like a chimp baby (brown marker on the body, hair trimmed off and colored brown, maybe some white marker on the chin and posterior and the other not modified as a control “troll” doll. The chimp’s reaction to choosing one of the two or, if just given both, which of the two dolls would be favored, would be the proof of the baby chimp model why the troll dolls are liked.

I love the pics where Negra’s leg is stretched out – she looks relaxed. Delightful post!
