We are less than one week away from our 4-year anniversary (June 13th)! And that means it’s almost Negra’s honorary birthday! Because Negra was born in the jungles of Africa, we do not know her actual birthday, and because she is the Queen of the Cle Elum Seven, we chose the chimps’ anniversary of their arrival to their sanctuary home as Negra’s special day.
Negra is not only the Queen of the Cle Elum Seven, she is also the Queen of nuts! Nothing makes her happier than her nightbag (nightbags are paper bags of nuts, dried fruit and seeds that we give the chimps each night after their dinner)– check out this video from a couple of years ago. It really is the best part of her day.
In honor of our Queen, we are hoping to stock up on unsalted, in shell nuts! Nuts.com (formerly NutsOnline.com) is a great company that has care packages specifically designed for the Cle Elum Seven, so we hope you will support them while supporting the Seven, too. For $25, we get 1 lb bags of mixed nuts, raw pumpkin seeds, hard shell pecans, raw almonds, raw walnuts, and raw Brazil nuts! It’s a great deal and is sure to make Negra and the rest of the gang so very happy! Visit this link to place an order.
We would also love to stock up on Safeway gift cards. We’ve got big plans for Negra’s big day next Wednesday and really hope to buy some great produce for the party- including lots and lots of lettuce, another one of Negra’s favorites! You can order gift cards and have them mailed to us directly by visiting this link.
Help us give Negra the best birthday yet! We promise to throw a spectacular party for the Queen!

Happy Birthday to you Negra and the Cle Elum 7. Our family has given to the Negra’s Cabin fundraiser over to the right so thank you for making that easy for us to do and for this reminder – she is beautiful.
On the nuts, I love the service they provide, however the shipping fees are pretty steep at 75% of the cost for a single bag of nuts. That said, I have reached out to them ans asked that they consider working with this team to come up with a creative solution where supporters could bundle orders and save on chipping so that every dollar for the chimps is maximized – meaning, more nuts for Nera :).
I’ll let you know what I hear and anyone else, if you have ideas around this, let us know.

Nuts.com did respond that they would pass on my suggestion. As it stands right now, the cost for a single 25.00 bag of nuts is 18+ dollars. It makes more sense to donate the total amount of 43+ dollars to the Sanctuary so that perhaps they could buy more bags in a single shipment.
Please post any other ideas here so we ensure that all the dollars count as much as they can.
I will update you if they come back to us with an alternative.

Hi Libby, thanks for sharing with us. I checked out the shipping costs on the site as I have bought nuts from them recently for the chimps – great company by the way and one of the few it seems that offers whole pieces in shells – and found the shipping to only be 11.34 per order. I sent a note to confirm from my last order. I did notice though that when you go to create an order, the first screen is for “Ship To,” and it’s possible to be mistaken for a “Bill To” that might be a zip code with more expensive shipping. Not easy to catch until you go and enter your credit card on a new screen. That said, I think 11.34 is not too bad and in line with other nut companies out on the web. Hope this helps as the more nuts we can get to the chimps and support such a good company, the better.

Hi Libby and Marissa,
Thanks so much to both of you for researching this! I looked at the website again and I believe Marissa is right– shipping is $11.34, which to me doesn’t seem too unreasonable, but please let us know if you find anything else out Libby.
And thank you Libby for donating for Negra’s cabin! I can’t wait to see her cuddled up in it! 🙂

Hi, thanks both of you. I will check this out as agree that 11 is reasonable.
Thank you and it is our families privilege to be able to give when we can.

I still think 11.34 for a $25 order is pretty steep; it’s half the cost of the nuts! If they offer gift cards that would be a better solution. (Sorry, haven’t yet been to the site). I’ll have to check.
