Happiest of honorary birthdays to Negra Chimpanzee! We are throwing a big party this weekend for Negra’s birthday and the 10th year of the chimpanzees arriving at the sanctuary, so stay tuned for that! Today we are doing some special things just for Queen Negra, namely giving her some of her favorite things to eat. This morning we started the day with sweet potato pancakes! Negra loves both sweet potatoes AND bread, so these pancakes were just the right thing for a breakfast treat. In case you missed the video of the chimps eating their pancakes, you should definitely check out our Facebook Live video on our page. For lunch we put out a lettuce and peanut forage on Young’s Hill, two more of Negra’s favorites.
In preparation for dinner, volunteer caregiver Jake is busy baking sweet potatoes, peeling corn and cutting up oranges. The queen will be thrilled!

I remember a old blog post from year five of sanctuary where one of the caregivers wrote “…..alot can happen if we just give them a chance”. Look at them today! Annie leading the charge out to Young’s Hill and even Negra out and about on a crisp morning. Indeed, a lot CAN happen and it did. Can never thank you all enough.
Looks like a gorgeous morning. The big, beautiful photo of Missy looking up to the sky made me gasp with delight. I know I have seen photos of Jody enjoying pine branches but I’d like to ask what parts do they eat? Or do they just chew for the pine sweetness and make a big wadge out branch and needles?

Just spent 10 minutes re-reading the peaceful commentary and looking at the pictures. It’s a wonderful part of my evening…..checking on the gang. 🙂

There’s double dipping. And there’s double dolling. I much prefer the latter. What a character Foxie is! Thank you for a lovely post to the start the day. The chimps have grown so much just in the two years I’ve been following them. I cannot imagine the changes since they first came.

My sister Kathy and I had a delightful visit with the staff and chimps. I enjoy the pictures and stories of the adventures at the sanctuary. Thank you.
