Jody

Another Sunny Day and Time Spent on Young’s Hill

February 22, 2015 by Keri

Sometimes looks can be deceiving. The sun was shining bright this morning, but there was still frost on the ground and a chill in the air. I figured the chimpanzees would wait for the temperature to rise a little before they would spend a good chunk of time on Young’s Hill, but that wasn’t the case this morning.

Volunteer caregiver Patti served breakfast in the Greenhouse and had just finished serving chow bags as I opened the door between the Greenhouse and Young’s Hill. Jody was actually waiting right by the door and walked out onto the hill, positioned herself in the sun and ate the contents of her first chow bag. Her breath was visible as the temperature was still in the 20’s.

Annie soon followed Jody outside and sat on the logs to eat her chow.

Missy followed Annie outside and took a few moments to sit on the logs and check out the scene.

After finishing her first bag of chow, Jody made her way further up Young’s Hill before returning to her previous spot. On the way back down the hill, Jody greeted Missy who was on her way up the hill.

Next to venture out onto Young’s Hill was Foxie, accompanied by her dear troll friend. She chose to enjoy her chow bags from the top of the platform in the sunshine.

Jamie chose to finish her chow bags inside the Greenhouse before venturing out onto the hill. She walked around, stopping to listen to the ducks who were making noise nearby.

web_Jamie_qp_walk_YH_kh_IMG_8728

Negra chose to enjoy her morning chow bags in the sun as well, just inside of the Greenhouse where it was warmer.

web_Negra_close-up_eat_chow_bag_GH_kh_IMG_8741

Burrito on the other hand, spent most of his morning on top of the platform in the Greenhouse (possibly enjoying the quiet as most of the ladies were on the Hill).

I’ll never get tired of seeing these chimpanzees on Young’s Hill, where they can actually feel the grass below them and the warmth of the sunshine on their faces.

Today is in memory of Orfeo Tanzi

February 22, 2015 by Katelyn

Today’s day of sanctuary was sponsored by Rita Stevenson in memory of her father, Orfeo Tanzi. Rita is a long-time supporter of chimpanzees and she shared this lovely message about today: “A year after my father passed away I saw the video of Jody munching away on a huge sunflower. It warmed my heart because my dad and I used to grow sunflowers in his huge garden. He loved chimps and all animals. He was kind to all animals. Thus, in memory of my father, I’ve been supporting Jody, Negra, Burrito, Missy, Annie, Foxie and Jamie with Nuts.com deliveries and blankets and toys care packages. Today, on my 60th birthday, I wish to honor my dear father who I miss and love dearly.”

Rita, thank you for not only honoring your father in this way and including the chimpanzees in your special memories of him, but also for sharing your own special day in order to make theirs better. We hope you have a wonderful birthday and may your day be filled with all the things you love.

Jody Harvesting in the Greenhouse

February 21, 2015 by Diana

As Katelyn mentioned in her post the other day, Jody is known as Jody the Harvester.

Though we have been having a very mild winter, there isn’t much new to harvest on Young’s Hill yet. Today, instead, Jody turned her harvesting attentions to the Christmas tree.

We’ve been getting a lot of use out of that Christmas tree – using it to hide goodies during various foraging parties. It’s in a big pot right now in the Greenhouse, and we are hoping to plant it on the hill in the spring, but we weren’t sure if the chimps would allow it to survive until we can plant it.

For the most part, they’ve ignored it, aside from getting treats out of it during parties. Every once in a while, however, Jody decides to take a few samples:

Jody the carpenter

February 19, 2015 by Katelyn

If you have been following the blog for awhile you may have seen us endearingly refer to Jody as “Farmer Jo Jo,” and “Jody the Harvester” due to her love of collecting wild plants and bamboo from Young’s Hill. We never tire of seeing how much she enjoys doing this and knowing that this is the first time in her life that she is able to harvest her own plants for eating or nesting makes it especially meaningful.

It’s also exciting every time we see the chimpanzees take an interest in something new. As caregivers, one of the biggest (and most important) challenges we face is alleviating the boredom that can come with captivity and keeping the chimps lives interesting and enriching. They are extremely intelligent and curious individuals and we never know what may spark their interest.

We are so grateful that the chimpanzees have such amazing friends and today they received a new tool kit, thanks to Debbie B., one of our neighbors in Canada! It’s often Jamie who goes straight for these items, but today Jody was the first one to check it out.

First off, the bite test:

Closer inspection:

This was the moment Jody looked up and decided to walk over and attempt to poke the paparazzi through the caging so the photo session ended here. But it was so great to see Jody checking out the new enrichment and expanding her horizons!

And then there’s Annie, just because:

Mardi Gras after party

February 18, 2015 by Katelyn

To start the day off with some excitement, you may have heard that we had a 4.4 earthquake here in Cle Elum very early this morning! It definitely shook things up a bit, but for the most part it seems to have just woken people up with a start. The chimpanzees remained quiet and have appeared unphased today, though Jamie was uncharacteristically still in bed when I arrived this morning.

To add to the excitement the chimpanzees celebrated Mardi Gras today! A bit late, but that’s no reason for them to skip a party! We decided to have a partial breakfast forage in the greenhouse this morning with banana and strawberry smoothie in fancy cups, peanuts in gift boxes and chow. And of course, what Mardi Gras celebration is complete without a couple of bald, eyeless trolls?

web_mardi_gras_2015_kd_IMG_8590

Burrito was beside himself and sat in the window fear grimacing with excitement and food squeaking as he watched one of our interns, Ally, and I set things up. His plan seems to have been to get as much chow as he could hold (mouth and hands both count):

web_burrito_closer_lots_of_chow_kd_IMG_8602

Jody was the first one out to the party and went straight for the fancy looking smoothies:

web_jody_drink_mardi_gras_kd_IMG_8593

It is Mardi Gras…

web_jody_drain_drink_mardi_gras_kd_IMG_8594

Fancy drinks are always one of Jamie’s favorites and she typically collects as many as she can:

web_jamie_drink_glasses_kd_IMG_8597

web_jamie_lick_party_glass_kd_IMG_8616

Foxie was really in the spirit of things and doing a lot of her signature “spider chimp” moves, but was so fast I could only capture a couple of photos:

web_foxie_stand_tire_party_kd_IMG_8619

web_foxie_climb_to_windowsill_ kd_IMG_8620

Negra really enjoyed the chow and gift boxes with peanuts (both her favorites) and spent her time looking for them. Though judging from her clapping in a demanding manner at us, it would seem she didn’t think we put out enough! I believe she was appeased by J.B. dancing for her though (don’t tell him I told you that 😉 ). But hey, what’s Mardi Gras without dancing? Though I am sorry there is no photographic evidence of this portion of the revelries.

web_negra_mardi_gras_gh_kd_IMG_8615

Annie and Missy enjoyed the hoopla as well, but both preferred to avoid the paparazzi.

And what better way to end the day than with a walk around Young’s Hill:

The Day After

February 15, 2015 by Keri

All the excitement from yesterday’s big Valentine’s Day celebration has left the chimpanzees pretty quiet today. All of them spent time on Young’s Hill (some a little longer than others) in the sunshine. And this afternoon, most of them relaxed in the Greenhouse.

Jamie, as you may have guessed, took quite a few walks around Young’s Hill, before grooming her boots in the Greenhouse this afternoon. After our morning cleaning, I put on two black boots and went out to accompany her. I must have took too long because when I went outside, she and Missy were already at the top of the hill. Once she saw me, she walked back down to meet me (Missy took off running) and we continued back up the hill.

web_Jamie_walk_back_to_meet_caregiver_keri_YH_kh_IMG_8534

web_Jamie_walk_back_to_meet_caregiver_keri_YH_kh_IMG_8533

Missy accompanied Jamie on a few of her perimeter patrols, half the time walking, half the time running. After that, she spent time chewing on an alfalfa cube in the Greenhouse.

As you may have guessed already, Foxie spent her afternoon with her troll and dora dolls.

web_Foxie_look_at_troll_dora_scarf_in_hand_sit_window_GH_kh_IMG_8563

Jody took a little time to stretch her arms from the tire swing. She also inspected the tree to see if there were any leftovers from yesterday’s party, although by the angle of the photo it seems she was deep in thought.
web_Jody_hold_tire_swing_stretch_GH_kh_IMG_8567

Annie was all about kicking her feet up and relaxing in the Greenhouse.
web_Annie_lie_down_back_relax_GH_kh_IMG_8553

Burrito followed up his walk around Young’s Hill by sitting in the doorway leading from the Greenhouse to outside, looking out.
web_Burrito_close-up_face_doorY_GH_kh_IMG_4182

web_Burrito_close-up_face_cute_GH_doorY_kh_IMG_4184

And Negra. She went outside for a few moments, looked up to the sky before going back into the Greenhouse, where she could be sheltered from the cool breeze. Unfortunately, for photo purposes, she spent her time on top of the platform out of camera reach. But here’s one of her resting in one of her favorite spots in the Playroom.

Sanctuary is love.

February 14, 2015 by Debbie

Today has been all about love! We threw a big party in the greenhouse for Valentine’s Day with the help of decorations and enrichment donated by Lisa S., Carol M., and volunteer Patti—plus delicious food donated by Anne R. and Patti, including some tasty buckwheat waffles with walnuts and carrots. They smelled delicious! Patti excluded the sugar and salt from the recipe, but the chimpanzees didn’t mind one bit. They wolfed them down!

Here’s some photos from the set-up:
web_valentine's_day_party_set-up_gh_dm_IMG_4533

web_valentine's_day_party_set-up_connie_drinks_dm_IMG_4529

During the party, Foxie started to whimper a little bit. Jamie swooped in and comforted her and even shared a waffle piece with her. Now that is love! Jamie is the boss of the group, and in the chimp world, that means she doesn’t have to share anything if she doesn’t want to. In fact, she can take anything from anyone to assert her dominance. So for her to share something with Foxie is a true gesture of friendship.

Negra especially loved the waffles:

We all appreciate your gestures of friendship and love for the chimpanzees and are blown away with how we surpassed our Share the Chimp Love goal! It warms our hearts to know that these chimpanzees mean so much to all of you that you would share your generosity with them.

note: Patty Clark’s name should have also been included in the heart above!

You all have played a part in a second chance at life for these chimpanzees.

As supporter Kathleen C. put it in her sponsor-a-day message for today, “Sanctuary is love.” Just watch the video below to see how much love they had for sanctuary today!

And here’s the final Share the Chimp Love image of what love is for Negra
