Never too old to play

June 5, 2009 by J.B.

Every once and a while, Negra musters enough energy to play with us and the other chimpanzees. This morning, she was giving kisses, tickling, and encouraging us to dance. And the other day, I caught her playing with Missy. I want to give Missy the benefit of the doubt, but I’m pretty sure she was tickling Negra just to get her blankets.

Either way, it’s nice to see Negra smiling.

Quiet time with trolls, more nesting

June 2, 2009 by J.B.

For Foxie, passing a troll to a caregiver is usually an invitation to play. But sometimes it can be an invitation to sit down and have some “quiet time”. Foxie will gently rub the troll on her belly, or place it in her pelvic pocket, and then pass it back to us. After a minute or so, she’ll extend her hand and ask for the troll back again. This back-and-forth can go on for quite some time, during which Foxie seems content as can be. This morning’s exchange involved two trolls:

As soon as I left, Foxie started to make a nest. Not a real nest, mind you, but a Foxie-style nest: a couple of trolls and a piece of fire hose. Better than nothing!

Eat, sleep, repeat

May 29, 2009 by J.B.

Last night, one of our volunteers made peppers stuffed with rice, apples and lime juice for dinner:

This morning, the chimps nibbled on grass:

Afterwards, Jody decided to make herself comfortable:

Missy, as usual, stopped to pose for a photo:

Lazy Thursday

May 28, 2009 by J.B.

Even with temperatures above 80 degrees, Negra insists on napping under a blanket. Behind her, Foxie and Jody muster just enough energy to play tickle laying down.

Mojitos!

May 22, 2009 by J.B.

This morning the chimps had some cocktails (virgin, of course) with their grass forage. Diana got some photos:

Some older photos

May 19, 2009 by J.B.

I didn’t get around to taking any photos or video today, so I had to look through my computer for older photos that we haven’t posted yet. Cheating, I know….

There’s something about this photo of Negra that I like. She has a great drooped-lip face:

Missy has beautiful eyes and she always throws a glance at the camera when she’s being photographed:

Brachiating and swinging

May 8, 2009 by J.B.

Just a short video of chimps being chimps. Foxie and Missy take turns brachiating across the roof of the enclosure. Then Jamie and Missy play with one of the new fire hose swings around the recently donated culvert.

My favorite part of the video: When Diana (and the camera) get hit with a flying troll. It’s an occupational hazard here at CSNW!
